PE

At WCPS we teach PE through real PE, alongside teaching skills related to specific team  sports.. Real PE, is first and foremost, a philosophy and approach which includes, challenges and supports EVERY child. It is a unique child centred approach that develops the key abilities children need to be successful in PE. Real PE is based around six fundamental skills that children need to develop their physical activity, as well as their well being.

Boys Football

WCP V OLOL   0-1

On Thursday 4th May, the upper junior boys had their second group match against Our Lady of Lourdes.

Both teams were strong, playing the ball well with tight defence. Going into half time, neither team had scored.

The second half saw opportunities from both teams but the defence continued to be excellent. Half way through the second half, OLOL managed to weave through WCP’s defence and the only goal of the match was scored.

Well played boys- you are a credit to WCP.

WCP V Madley     2-3

On Tuesday 25th April, a team of upper junior boys faced their first group football game against Madley. The sun was shining, the pitch had been cut and marked out and the boys were ready to go.

Soon after the whistle had started the game, we were unlucky to concede a goal. As the first half progressed, we had chances but Madley took a second opportunity just before the halftime whistle.

After a halftime briefing with Mr Rodd, the boys set out with renewed vigour. Our efforts were eventually rewarded and we scored two goals to bring the game level at 2-2. It looked as if a draw was on the cards but Madley were able to place the ball in the back of the net in the final minutes of the game.

Our boys' energy never ceased and it was a very admirable and skillful game. Importantly, the attitude on and off the pitch was exemplary. Well-played boys!

Dear Mrs Hanson,

We just wanted to say thank you for organising the football yesterday. Our boys really enjoyed it and it was lovely to see 40 children out in the fresh air enjoying themselves!

We wanted to give your two goal-keepers a special mention as we thought they both played extremely well. Your goalie on your winning team made many great saves.

Your goalie on the other team was superb!! He made numerous brilliant saves and was very brave. We also noticed how he never dropped his head when a goal was scored against him and he maintained a positive attitude throughout the entire game towards his team mates.

If you have golden awards at all in assembly, then we feel they are both fully deserving of one!

Thank you

Mrs Woodage and Mrs Henderson (The Batt)

Assessments

Through videos, the children are able to peer and self-assess which plays a key part in the review part of their learning and how they can improve and move their learning on.

Cross Country - Henry Box - 26th January 2023

A strong team of 17 girls and boys across the juniors participated in the Witney Partnership Cross Country Competition.

As a team for each category, we finished very respectfully midtable across the board. Well done to all of the participants and a special mention to Alex who will be representing the school in the West Primary Cross Country Finals.

Mixed Hockey

The Witney Hockey Tournament

A very exciting day finally came along - Monday 20th February 2023. Witney Community Primary School went to Wood Green School for the West Oxfordshire Hockey Tournament .

Our first match was against North Leigh School. We had a very positive start with Elliot scoring the first goal of the tournament. It continued to be a great game and we came away with a draw of 1-1 ; it did not get us down and we carried on.

The match against West Witney was fast and furious. The final score was 0-1 to us which felt amazing.

Queen Emma’s School was tough and we tried our best but it ended up being a very respectful 0-0.

This score was mirrored against Aston: 0-0. The games continued like this with our final score against Batt being 0-0 and against Tower Hill.

Throughout the tournament, we were amazing defenders.

It was a brilliant afternoon and our coaches, Mrs Hanson and Mr Rodd were very proud of us. Thank you!

Boccia

Boccia Report

On Monday the 20th of March, a group of children went to a Boccia tournament at Henry Box School.

There were five schools taking place in the tournament. We finished a brilliant third with superb individual performances.

What is Boccia?

The game can be played by individuals, pairs or teams of three and all events are mixed gender. The aim of the game is to throw leather balls as close as possible to a white target ball. The balls are coloured red or blue and the decision as to who plays which colour is decided normally by a coin toss.

Tag Rugby May 2023

Witney RFC hosted an upper junior tag rugby tournament and WCP entered three mixed teams. The word ‘awesome’ sums up the afternoon: all players were focused, enthusiastic and powered all of their energy onto the rugby pitch. Each team remembered the mantra, ‘run forward, support and width’ which ensured success all round. The first team took away four wins, two draws and two loses by the narrowest of margins. In a separate league, we had a brilliant run with one of the teams entering the final. Huge congratulations to all of the players - you put 100% into the games and were a credit to WCP.

Sports Ambassadors

June 20th - 26th is National Sports Week. Watch this video to hear some cracking ideas from Witney CP's Sports Ambassadors. Updates to follow.

Quad Kids 2023

WCPS took a mixed squad of U9s and U11s to a partnership Quad Kids Competition. Each competitor had to compete in four disciplines: vortex throw, standing jump, sprint and long distance. Resilience, perseverance and determination entered the spirit of all of the children and it was a brilliant team effort. A special mention to Tataina who, out of 36 boys and girls, came third overall and first out of the girls.

National Sports Week

During National Sports Week, the PE ambassadors led two assemblies to encourage all of the children to be active for 60 minutes each day. It was a very active week! The children skipped over 5000 steps, had wheelbarrow races with their reading buddies, competed in partnership school events and threw, jumped and raced in a brilliant sports day. Phew! The children showed many of the school values including perseverance, resilience, determination and respect.

Cricket Tournaments

This month, we have seen three teams take part in cricket tournaments across the partnership. There have been wins, close loses and some outstanding performances. Well done to the year 5 boys team, year 6 girls team and the year 6 boys team.

Sports' Leaders

Trained Sports Leaders from Marlborough School spent an afternoon with 15 year fives. The session intent was to train the year fives to become Sports Leaders for WCPS with a focus on well-being and resilience. During the session, the children discussed what it means to be a sports leader and they planned activities which are accessible to all children regardless of age or ability.
The newly trained Sports Leaders spent a session with the year twos, trialling out their games - it was a great success.
